The Ojibwe Indians and Dakota people were the earliest settlers in the region that is known as Minnetonka today.

The two communities believed that an extinct race inhabited the land around the lake before their arrival.

The first Europeans to settle on this land arrived in 1822 through Minnehaha Creek. Since then, economic activities began being established in the region.

In 1956, the residents in the Minnetonka Township voted to incorporate the Minnetonka village, and they were successful. The Minnetonka village only lasted for 13 years, before it was accorded a city charter in 1969.
